Life at the beach

Well, time flies…. These couple of days on the Coromandel Peninsula are almost over. Living right next to the beach does have its advantages. I just went for a dip in the sea. Yes, me 😁 a bit cold in the beginning, but nice once you’re in. But the waves are quite strong, so I didn’t stay long. Anyway, it was so nice in the sun and the glittering sea. There is more beach to come. So let’s wait and see.

The first day was an early one. I had a kayak tour booked to Cathedral Cove. I had about 45 minutes to get there. A lovely place and a great beach where we started. Unfortunately it was the only day so far that was overcast. The sun came later in the afternoon, but in the morning it had dark clouds and quite some wind. Nevertheless off we went and the tour was fun. I joined a Dutch family and two girls from the UK. We had to stay close to the coast due to the waves, but we managed fine. Cathedral Cove itself I have to admit is not that special. It is a lovely place and in the sunshine probably even more so, but on the other hand there are just some rocks around a beach. And after I have seen other places in the area those last two says, I have to say if you cannot make it to the cove, do not worry.

I have been to so many nice little beaches and great landscapes I have to say this part of the north island is really nice. I did some smaller walks but mainly enjoyed the sun and relaxed a little.

Yesterday I thought I stay next to the B&B, which by the way is great and run by a Scottish lady (the home made bread is delicious!)for dinner. So I walked along the beach to the centre of the hamlet here. There is one restaurant and it was still early. You would not imagine the crowd there! I had to queue for almost 45 minutes until a table was available. And then another 45 minutes to get my fish and chips. Although they were tasty. But who would have thought that you get Stuttgart high end location feeling in the almost middle of nowhere…. funny that was.

Today I went round the almost northern part of the peninsula. The roads were mostly only gravel roads. Fun to drive and the car looks a mess now 😂 but who cares….. It was very nice up there. Rural and somehow unspoilt.

I had a late lunch in Coromandel town. This little village is the first I have been to on this journey that I liked. It wasn’t so run down and unloved. There are a couple of really nice shops and small restaurants and cafes. Very pretty.

So tomorrow I am off even further up north past Auckland. I will stop in the city for the day to meet Lea, my godchild. I have to make sure she is all right 😉 She is enjoying her life as student over here for a year. Lucky girl!

But for now I am enjoying the evening sun a little bit more. See you!

    Hi again,Maike,

    Mum
